New Skilled Immigration Act / Opportunity Map
Opportunity map for job search,
§ 20a Residence Act
The last stage of the Skilled Immigration Act has been in force since June 1, 2024. The opportunity card, which is issued for a maximum of 1 year, allows you, under certain conditions, to enter Germany and look for a job or become self-employed. It is important that you are allowed to work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week and do trial jobs for a maximum of 2 weeks while you are looking for a job.
There are two options for this:
You have a university degree or vocational qualification recognized in Germany: If you can prove that you have a livelihood. If you do not have a degree recognized in Germany, you can apply for the card using a points system. You need at least six points. You can collect points for the criteria "equivalence of qualifications", "qualifications in a shortage occupation", "professional experience", "language skills", "age", "previous stay in Germany", "potential of the spouse/partner as a skilled worker". If you have achieved at least six points, the opportunity card will be issued if you can prove that you have a livelihood.
You can find out how many points you will achieve in each area from the really good presentation on the BMI homepage, see the following link:
